Alberta Road Test Policies
You must read the following road test requirements and agree to abide by all requirements and cancellation policies before scheduling a road test.
At the time of the road test, you must meet the following requirements. IF ANY OF THE OUTLINED REQUIREMENTS ARE NOT MET PRIOR TO THE TEST, YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE ROAD TEST AND THE TESTING FEE WILL NOT BE REFUNDED. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR A NEW TEST.

Checklist:

  • Pay all outstanding traffic tickets or other monetary penalties on your motor vehicle file at least 24 hours before your test to prevent any delays.
  • Ensure you meet eligibility requirements for the class of test you are taking. Please see the eligibility criteria below.
  • Bring a vehicle that is in good working order, including no cracked or obstructed windshields, functioning lights and no non-factory tinting on front side doors or front windshield. Please see below for further details of vehicle requirements.
  • Ensure that you bring the required documentation for your licence class listed below.
  • Medical form completed in the last six months (Class 4 Only)
  • If you are reinstating your licence and are unsure of your reinstatement conditions, please visit our office in-person to ensure that your road test can proceed.
  • Note that only one road test can be booked at a time, and you may only take one road test per day.
  • Ensure that you meet COVID-19 requirements as listed below.

COVID-19 Requirements

  • You must provide a mask, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes or spray. The Chief Medical Officer recommends that the mask not be homemade or cloth.
  • At the time of the test you must pass COVID-19 screening questions.
  • You may be asked to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver; if so, a parent or legal guardian with proof of guardianship, must be present to sign the waiver if you are under the age of 18.
  • Please limit the number of people who accompany you to your test.
  • The Driver Examiner can end the road test at any time or refuse to administer a road test if they feel that their health or safety is at risk.
  • If you have medical exemption from masking please contact the registry office to see if your road test can proceed.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must arrive 30 minutes prior to your road test appointment. Please check in with a registry clerk who will verify your eligibility to take the road test. Failure to arrive ahead of your scheduled appointment time may result in your appointment being cancelled with no refund. There is no grace period to begin the exam.
  • All outstanding fines on your motor vehicle file must be paid ahead of your road test. If the fine payment is made online within the last 5 days, proof of payment will be required. If you are unable to satisfy this requirement, the road test will not proceed, no refund will be issued and you will be responsible for paying for a new road test. You are encouraged to pay any fines on your motor vehicle file at least 24 hours ahead of the test to prevent delays.
  • If you are under 18 years old and applying for a driver's licence your parent or legal guardian with proof of guardianship, must accompany you to a registry to sign a consent form on your licence application and COVID-19 liability waiver. If you are bringing a legal guardian other than a birth or step parent, please contact the registry to determine what documentation will be required.
  • You must produce a valid Alberta Learner's or Driver's Licence - you may provide a temporary licence with an additional piece of government issued photo identification like a passport, permanent resident card or Nexus card.
  • If you are reinstating your licence, you may require additional testing or documentation. Please visit our office in person prior to your road test if you are unsure of the suspension reinstatement conditions. If you fail to confirm eligibility prior to the road test, you will not be eligible to reschedule or receive a refund. You will be responsible to pay for a new test.
  • You must meet all conditions on your driver's licence (eg: bring your glasses if the licence has a condition code A).
  • Audio and/or video recordings of any type are not permitted during road tests.
  • You must meet the minimum age requirements and all requirements for the licence class you are being tested for. If you are not eligible for the road test, the road test will not be rescheduled and a refund will not be issued. You will be responsible for paying for a new test.
Class 4 Commercial Licence for Taxi, Ambulance, Bus (that seats under 24 passengers)
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Hold a valid full, non-GDL Class 5 licence at minimum;
  • Pass Class 4 knowledge test within the last 12 months;
  • Complete vision assessment (can be completed at registry office); and
  • Medical report completed in the last six months from a doctor or nurse practitioner
  • have proof that you live in Alberta
  • have valid ID
  • An air brake "Q" endorsement is required to operate air brake equipped vehicles. If the vehicle provided for the road test is equipped with air brakes, you must have either an air brake "Q" endorsement or a course completion certificate from an approved air brake organization.
Class 5 - graduated driver's licence
  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • Have had a Class 7 learner's licence with at least one year of driving experience;
  • If you are under 18, you must have written consent from a parent or legal guardian; and
  • Complete vision assessment at the registry office.
Full, non-GDL Class 5 Licence
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Drive for at least 2 years as a Class 5-GDL driver;
  • Have a valid licence with no licence suspensions during the last 12 months of the Class 5-GDL licence stage; and
  • Complete vision assessment at the registry office.
Class 6, Motorcycle - graduated driver's licence (for new drivers)
  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • Pass a Class 6 knowledge test within the last 12 months;
  • Have a minimum a Class 7 learner's licence for at least a year;
  • If you are under 18, you must have written consent from a parent or guardian; and
  • Complete vision assessment at registry office.
Full non-GDL Class 6 Motorcycle Licence (for drivers who already hold full Class 5 licence)
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • drive for at least 2 years as a GDL driver;
  • have a valid licence with no licence suspensions during the last 12 months of the GDL licence stage; and
  • Complete vision assessment at registry office.

Vehicle/Equipment Requirements:

You must provide your own vehicle for road testing, unless you are renting a vehicle from the registry. The vehicle provided must be in good working condition and meet all the requirements listed below. If your vehicle does not meet the requirements your road test will be cancelled, and you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
Class 4 Commercial Licence for Taxi, Ambulance, Bus (that seats under 24 passengers)
  • Certificate of vehicle registration (copies acceptable) and insurance pink card. The names on the insurance and registration must match.
  • The vehicle must have enough fuel, windshield wiper fluid and other fluids for the test.
  • You must provide a mechanically sound vehicle including functioning:
    • Headlights;
    • Brake lights - including high-centre mount brake light, if equipped;
    • Signal lights;
    • Horn;
    • Speedometer;
    • Brakes;
    • Seatbelts;
    • Vehicle controls;
    • Windshield wipers;
    • Exhaust system;
    • Windows and doors; and
    • Check engine light must not be illuminated.
  • Unobstructed windshields and mirrors. A windshield may be rejected for the following reasons:
    • Cracks or blemishes more than 12mm in diameter in the area swept by the wipers;
    • Crack through both layers;
    • A crack that extends to another edge or back to originating edge through the area swept by the wipers; or
    • Windshield is pitted, scratched to the extent the driver's visibility is affected.
  • Front side windows and windshield must be free of non-factory tint.
  • Tires must be in good condition.
  • Clean and uncluttered passenger seat for the examiner.
  • A rental vehicle may be available to rent for your test.
  • No passengers, pets, food, drinks, smoking, use of mobile device, personal grooming or other distractions are allowed during the road test.
  • If you provide a rental vehicle, you must provide a copy of the contract with your name on it. Rental contract must match the name of the individual taking the road test. If you have a Class 7 licence, you may not be able to rent a vehicle in your name, no one else may rent the vehicle.
  • A driver examiner may cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.
Class5/5GDL:
  • Original certificate of vehicle registration and original insurance pink card. The names on the insurance and registration must match.
  • The vehicle must have enough fuel, windshield wiper fluid and other fluids for the test.
  • You must provide a mechanically sound vehicle including functioning:
    • Headlights;
    • Brake lights - including high-centre mount brake light, if equipped;
    • Signal lights;
    • Horn;
    • Speedometer;
    • Brakes;
    • Seatbelts;
    • Vehicle controls;
    • Windshield wipers;
    • Exhaust system; and
    • Windows and doors; and
    • Check engine light must not be illuminated.

  • A driver examiner may cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.
Class 6/6GDL:
  • Original certificate of vehicle registration and insurance pink card. The names on the insurance and registration must match.
  • You must also provide a fully charged cellphone and earbuds with embedded microphone to allow for communication with the examiner.
  • The vehicle must have enough fuel and other fluids for the test.
  • You must provide a mechanically sound vehicle including functioning:
    • Headlights;
    • Brake lights;
    • Signal lights;
    • Horn;
    • Speedometer;
    • Brakes;
    • Vehicle controls;
    • Exhaust system; and
    • Check engine light must not be illuminated.
  • Tires must be in good condition.
  • You must provide an approved helmet (must have label or mark from CSA, DOT, BSI or SNELL) – unless you qualify for exemption under the Sikh helmet exemption
  • A rental vehicle may be available to rent for your test.
  • No passengers, pets, food, drinks, smoking, use of mobile device, personal grooming or other distractions are allowed during the road test.
  • If you provide a rental vehicle, you must provide a copy of the contract with your name on it. Rental contract must match the name of the individual taking the road test. If you have a class 7 licence, you may not be able to rent a vehicle in your name, no one else may rent the vehicle.
  • A driver examiner may cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.

Cancellations, re-booking and no-show policy

  • If you are late to your appointment or fail to show up, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If you need to cancel your road test you must do it during business hours prior to the registry's specified timeline. Contact the registry where you are taking your test for more information. Depending on the registry location, there may a fee associated with this.
  • If you need to reschedule your road test you must do it during business hours prior to the registry's specified timeline. Contact the registry where you are taking your test for more information. Depending on the registry location, there may a fee associated with this.
  • Rescheduling is only allowed for up to one year from the originally scheduled appointment date.
  • If you do not meet eligibility requirements, do not have required documentation or if the vehicle you provide for your road test is deemed unsafe you are not eligible for a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements, please visit us in person to confirm your eligibility.
  • Driver examiners may cancel a road test on short notice or onsite due to poor weather conditions as determined by the driver examiner. If your exam is cancelled due to poor or unsafe weather conditions you will be able to reschedule the test at no additional fee. If you are not comfortable completing your road test in weather or road conditions deemed acceptable by the driver examiner, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • Driver examiners can cancel the road test if they feel that you are unsafe to drive due to a physical or cognitive impairment or suspect that you are impaired by alcohol or drugs. If a test is cancelled for these reasons, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If the Registry Agent is unable to provide a road test for a booked appointment, you will have the option of rescheduling.
