Alberta Road Test Policies

You must read the following road test requirements and agree to abide by all requirements and cancellation policies before scheduling a road test.
At the time of the road test, you must meet the following requirements.

IF ANY OF THE OUTLINED REQUIREMENTS ARE NOT MET PRIOR TO THE TEST, YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE ROAD TEST AND THE TESTING FEE WILL NOT BE REFUNDED. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR A NEW TEST.

Checklist:

  • Do you meet the eligibility requirements for the class of test you are taking? Please see the eligibility criteria below.
  • Bring a vehicle that is in good working order. That means no cracked or obstructed windshields, functioning lights (including center high mounted brake light) and no tint on front side doors or front windshield. Please see below for further details of vehicle requirements.
  • If you require glasses or contact lenses to improve your vision, they will be required for your road test.
  • Bring valid auto insurance, vehicle registration documents and identification with you, see below for details.
  • Have you completed a driver's training course? If so, please bring in your original course completion certificate to reduce the Graduation Driver’s Licence probationary period.
  • Pay all outstanding traffic tickets or other fines on your motor vehicle file. Pay all fines at least 24 hours before your test to prevent any delays.
  • Are you reinstating your licence after restrictions? Please visit our office in person before booking your road test to ensure that your road test can proceed.
  • For a Class 6 (motorcycle) road test you need to bring an approved helmet and fully charged cellphone and earbuds to allow for communication with the Examiner.

Note that only one road test per licence class can be booked at a time, and you may only take one road test for each licence class per day.

Vehicle Eligibility Class 5:
  • You must provide your own vehicle for road testing, unless you are renting a vehicle in your own name from the registry office (if available).
  • A driver examiner will determine if your vehicle is in good working condition and meets all the requirements listed below.
  • If your vehicle does not meet the requirements, your road test will be cancelled without a refund. Please call or visit a registry office ahead of your road test if you are unsure if your vehicle will meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Registration: A current registration certificate is required. Acceptable proof includes the physical certificate, a photocopy, a printed copy, or a digital version. Screenshots and photos are not permitted.
  • Insurance: You must have valid vehicle insurance. A physical insurance card (pink card), a photocopy, or a digital copy is acceptable. Screenshots and photos are not permitted.

  • Vehicle Condition:
    • Clear windows and mirrors with no cracks. A cracked windshield or side glass must be evaluated from inside the vehicle for its impact on outward vision. Driver Examiners will discontinue the road test if they feel safety is compromised by limited visibility.
    • Front side windows and windshield must be free of any tint. A vehicle will be rejected if any transparent or opaque film is applied to the windshield, front driver and passenger side windows.
    • Adequate fuel, windshield wiper fluid and other fluids for the test.
    • Functional headlights, brake lights (including high-centre mount brake light, if equipped), turn signal lights, horn, speedometer, brakes, seatbelts, vehicle controls, windshield wipers, exhaust system, headrests, windows and doors.
    • Your vehicle will be refused if the airbag or SRS light is illuminated.
    • Tires must be in good condition and properly inflated with all lug nuts in place.
    • Your vehicle must be clean with an uncluttered passenger seat for the Examiner.
    • If you have a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device, it can only be used for a road test when you are in the Ignition Interlock Program.
  • Rental vehicles: You may be able to rent a vehicle for your test at the registry office. If you use a rental vehicle, you must provide a copy of the contract with your name on it and you must meet the eligibility criteria of the contract. Major car rental companies do not permit Class 7 drivers to rent vehicles. Vehicles from a ride/car share company are not permitted for road tests.
  • Restrictions:
    • The use of audio and/or video recording devices is prohibited during the road test.
    • No passengers, pets, food, drinks, smoking, use of mobile device, personal grooming or other distractions are allowed during the road test.
  • Safety: A Driver Examiner will cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.

Cancellations, rebooking and no-show policy

  • If you are late to your appointment or fail to show up, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If you need to cancel your road test you must do it during business hours prior to the registry's specified timeline. Contact the registry where you are taking your test for more information. Depending on the registry location, there may a fee associated with this.

  • Rescheduling is only allowed for up to months from the originally scheduled appointment date.
  • If you do not meet eligibility requirements, do not have required documentation or if the vehicle you provide for your road test is deemed unsafe you are not eligible for a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements, please visit us in person to confirm your eligibility.
  • Driver examiners may cancel a road test on short notice or onsite due to poor weather conditions as determined by the driver examiner. If your exam is cancelled due to poor or unsafe weather conditions you will be able to reschedule the test at no additional fee. If you are not comfortable completing your road test in weather or road conditions deemed acceptable by the driver examiner, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • Driver examiners can cancel the road test if they feel that you are unsafe to drive due to a physical or cognitive impairment or suspect that you are impaired by alcohol or drugs. If a test is cancelled for these reasons, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for paying for a new road test.
  • If the Registry Agent is unable to provide a road test for a booked appointment, you will have the option of rescheduling.
